Two women have been taken to hospital after a car crashed off a bridge onto the M8 near Glasgow Airport.

Police closed the motorway westbound at junction 27, near Paisley, after the crash was reported at about 20:40, but it reopened by midnight.

Renfrew Road, which goes over the M8, was also closed due to barrier damage at the bridge between the Abbotsinch Retail Park roundabout and Arkleston Road roundabout. It has also reopened.

Officers say inquiries are ongoing and motorists are urged to avoid the area.

Traffic Scotland said drivers were being diverted off the motorway into local routes.

Images from the scene showed a badly damaged barrier on Renfrew Road cordoned off by police.

The closed section of the M8 appeared to have an oil splatter on the road near the overhead bridge.

Long tailbacks of traffic around the crash scene were diverted onto local roads in Paisley and Renfrew.
