A 53-year-old man is seriously ill in hospital following a murder bid in Paisley.

Police Scotland said the alarm was raised after a disturbance broke out on George Street, in the Renfrewshire town, at about 20:00 on Monday.

The man's condition has been described as serious but stable.

Officers said a number of roads remain closed, including George Street at Barr Place, Lady Lane at Argyle Street and Castle Street at Argyle Street, with local diversions in place.

The force added inquiries were ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

Det Sgt Daniel Small said: "It's vital we trace the person responsible for this violent attack and I'm appealing for information from the public.

"Were you in the area at the time and saw what happened? Do you have CCTV, doorbell or dash-cam footage which has captured something of significance? If you have any information which could help, please get in touch."

He added there would be an increased police presence in the area and urged anyone with concerns to approach officers.
