M5 closed due to ongoing police incident

National Highways said there is currently five miles of congestion approaching the area

A section of the M5 has been closed in both directions while police respond to an incident.

The motorway is shut near Bristol between Junction 18 (Avonmouth) and 19 (Portishead) southbound and Junction 18 to 21 (Weston-super-Mare) northbound.

Avon and Somerset Police closed the route at about 20:00 BST and officers have urged motorists to avoid the area.

National Highways said there is currently 8km (5 miles) of congestion approaching the area, with delays building.
