New homes approved despite over-development fears
PA MediaPlans to build 60 new homes in a village have been approved despite concerns being raised about over-development.
East Cambridgeshire District Council's planning committee green-lit the blueprints for the sixth phase of the Millstone Park development in Burwell, Cambridgeshire, on Wednesday.
Burwell Parish Council objected to the new application because it would increase the number of properties on the site to 410, more than the approximately 350 the land had been earmarked for.
Justin Baynton, speaking on behalf of developer This Land, denied the proposed homes had been "squeezed in" to the wider estate near Newmarket, Suffolk.
Planning officer Sophie Browne said adding the extra properties was "in line with the direction of travel from government and the national push for housebuilding".
"The associated on-site infrastructure would include public open space and an equipped play area," she told the meeting.
The development off Newmarket Road would include 24 affordable homes, she added.

The parish council had also raised concerns about how local infrastructure would cope with the extra homes.
Baynton said: "It's providing more affordable housing which is much needed, but it will hopefully support some of the existing facilities in Burwell as well."
Lynda Warth from the British Horse Society told councillors she was concerned about a lack of bridleways along Newmarket Road, which was a matter for Cambridgeshire County Council.
None of the other authorities that were consulted, including the fire service and county council, raised objections.
Eight councillors voted in favour of the proposal - and three against.
This Land, which is overseeing the development, is owned by Cambridgeshire County Council.
