A major route has reopened after a serious gas leak was discovered under a road, council leaders have said.

Somerset Council said the A39 Bath Road in Bridgwater had shut on Thursday, between the intersection with Bailey Street and the McMillan Theatre.

Wales and West Utilities' workers were at the site to carry out emergency repairs. The road reopened overnight on Friday, Somerset Council said.

Steve Bakes, Wales & West Utilities operations manager for Bridgwater, previously said there were "no impact on local gas supplies".
