Police were told two dogs were on the loose on Lynton Road

A dog has been shot dead after a man was taken to hospital with bite injuries.

It happened earlier when police received reports two dogs were on the loose on Lynton Road, in Southport, Merseyside, at about 10:45 BST.

A man in his 30s was bitten on his stomach and arm, and needed to be taken to hospital. A second man, thought to be in his 70s, was approached by the dogs but was not injured, Merseyside Police said.

When armed officers arrived on the scene they made the decision to kill one of the dogs and detain the other. The pair are not believed to be a banned breed.
