Free blood pressure checks offered in September

Free blood pressure checks are being offered to islanders as part of a campaign targeting cardiovascular disease.

A number of pharmacies are offering the checks between from 7-13 September.

Mark Harris, lead for the Jersey Heart Support Group, said: "Knowing your blood pressure is one of the simplest ways to understand more about your health."

The most recent data showed cardiovascular disease to be the second highest cause of death on the island.

The Government of Jersey said the campaign was to "highlight the importance of early detection and prevention".

It warned high blood pressure "often has no obvious symptoms" and it can increase the risk of things like heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

Almost one in five islanders has high blood pressure, and the government says "lifestyle changes" such as healthy eating and being physically active, can reduce it.

Jersey's most recent morbidity report found cardiovascular disease was the second highest cause of death behind cancers.

Free blood pressure checks are available in 20 community pharmacies across the island.

Harris said: "High blood pressure can often be detected early and managed through lifestyle changes and medical support where needed".
