Tracey Little will take over as deputy leader with Stephen Thompson continuing as leader

A council has elected a new deputy leader after the last person in the role won a seat in the Scottish Parliament election.

Katie Hagmann took the Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley constituency for the SNP last month.

She has since stepped down as deputy leader of Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Tracey Little - who is already the provost of Dumfries and also an SNP councillor - will step into the post.

Hagmann took up the role about a year ago when her party took control of the council.

The Conservative leader and deputy leader had stepped down in the face of a vote of no confidence.

Last month Hagmann helped the SNP to hold the Carrick, Cumnock and Doon Valley constituency which sits to the north of Dumfries and Galloway.

A special meeting called to see who would take her place as deputy to council leader, Stephen Thompson, selected Little.

Hagmann intends to continue in her role as a councillor with the local authority representing the Mid Galloway and Wigtown West ward.

Thompson paid tribute to her work in the post which he said she had fulfilled with "commitment, dignity and care for our region".

He also welcomed Little - who represents the Lochar ward - to the role which she said was an "honour".

"I am proud to take on this role and to play my part in representing Dumfries and Galloway," she said.
