Demolition work to start on landmark car park
North East Lincolnshire CouncilA landmark car park is to be demolished early next year.
Abbey Walk Car Park, in Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, has been closed since May 2024 after defects were discovered in the structure.
Work on its demolition will start on 5 January 2026 and is expected to take 12 weeks.
It will be replaced with a ground-level car park, with foundations that will allow for extra storeys if needed.
According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the contract for the demolition is about £750,000.
The work will be constrained by a railway line and an office building bordering the site.
Abbey Walk will be closed between Osborne Street and the entrance to Garden Street during the work.
The pillars of the car park feature modernist reliefs by artist and sculptor Harold Gosney.
Campaigners fought to save the panels and the University of Lincoln scanned the sculptures to create digital 3D models to allow them to be recreated in the future.
