A warning has been issued by a police force after a white van was spotted billowing smoke on a dual carriageway.

The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit said officers passed the lorry on the Stanborough link road in Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire.

A spokesperson said: "Smoking is bad for you, especially if it's your vehicle smoking."

The driver was issued with a PG9, a legal order showing the vehicle has a serious defect.

It was also discovered the vehicle was not taxed and did not have an MoT certificate.

The incident happened at 15:17 BST on Wednesday and the lorry was removed at 16:22.

The force said all vehicles on the road must be taxed, have a current MoT certificate, be roadworthy, insured and be registered with the DVLA.
