Resort's free light festival celebrates 10th anniversary

A resort is unveiling 10 new artworks as it celebrates the 10th anniversary of its festival of light.

Thirty artworks will shine in the Lightpool Festival 2026 in Blackpool, which takes place between 21-31 October.

The free festival will feature spectacular installations in the light art trail, 3D projection shows and premieres by some of the world's leading artists, with the Bayeux Tapestry and the town's Stanley Park featured to mark its 100th year.

Phil Holmes, the festival's artistic director, said the event would be "a truly memorable experience that fosters community building and the passion of young, emerging creatives".

The event coincides with the Blackpool Illuminations, which run until 3 January.

This year will see ten new artworks presented.

Local community groups will be an important part of this year's event, also.

The lightwork by the talented Blackpool School of Art students marks the centenary of Stanley Park, and explores ideas of leisure, ownership of space and reconnection.

Meanwhile, Aunty Social, a grassroot art organisation, has drawn inspiration from The Bayeux Tapestry's historic return to the UK after nearly 1,000 years in France.

In collaboration with local communities and residents through open calls and workshops, Aunty Social has created an impressive 10m (33ft) tapestry which depicts the town's colourful and meaningful history.

Leader of Blackpool Council Lynn Williams said the festival was a "cherished moment in Blackpool's event calendar" and this year's programme "is set to be truly special".
