Major works to start on Brent Cross flyover

Drivers using the Brent Cross Flyover on the A41 or surrounding roads are being advised to avoid the area or face longer journey times as major renewal works get under way.

Starting on Wednesday evening, the flyover will be reduced to a single lane in each direction and a number of overnight and weekend closures are planned throughout the works.

The Transport for London (TfL) scheme is the first phase of a programme to renew and strengthen the Brent Cross Interchange - where the A41 and A406 North Circular Road cross over.

TfL said the work - which could take as long as two years - was needed to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the flyover and prevent emergency closures.

The scheme, which received £10.8m of central government funding, is to strengthen the major route, which is used by more than 120,000 vehicles each day.

When the works are completed, heavy good vehicles can be re-introduced to the route, having been banned due to safety fears since 2022.

Safety barriers will also be replaced on the flyover and approach ramps and a new waterproofing system will be installed.

People making long journeys are advised to use the M25 to orbit London instead, while people making local journeys are urged to walk or cycle where possible.

Local buses will run as usual, but will be subject to the same restrictions as other vehicles.

Road users are expected to check before travelling.

The following disruption on the route is expected in the coming months:

• Overnight road closure (22:00-0500) on 30 September on the westbound A406 North Circular Road
• Lane restrictions will be in place on the A41 Hendon Way from 1 October to 28 October
• Lane restrictions will be in place on the westbound A406 from 1 October until 20 November 2026.
• A contraflow system will be in place on the A41 flyover from 29 October, meaning reduced road space
• Overnight road closures on 1 October and 2 October on the A41 Hendon Way southbound from Vivian Avenue to The Vale
• Overnight closures on 6 October and 7 October on the A41 Hendon Way northbound from The Vale to Vivian Avenue
• Longer journey times throughout the works on the A41, parts of the A406 North Circular Road, A5 Edgware Road and A1

Signed diversion routes will be in place, and residents and road users will be updated in advance, TfL said.

TfL said it would implement a range of measures to minimise disruption, such as signal improvements and targeted travel advice.

Due to the site's proximity to Brent Cross Shopping Centre, the work is to be paused for the Christmas shopping between the end of November and the start of January.

Future phases of the Brent Cross Interchange renewal programme are likely to include works to the mid-level roundabout and A406 slip roads.
