Detectives investigating the fatal shooting of a jeweller nearly 37 years ago have made an arrest.

Richard Haywood, , 36, known to many as Ricky, was shot multiple times in his flat above Ambiance Jewellers in Shirley Road, Southampton, on 16 October 1989.

A 55-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody on Tuesday.

Hampshire police continues to appeal for information. A £20,000 reward has previously been offered by charity Crimestoppers which expires on 14 August.

The case was one of Hampshire's biggest murder inquiries and the force made an appeal on BBC One's Crimewatch programme at the time.

Detectives spoke to 11,000 people and took about 4,000 statements, but no-one was charged.

In 2004, Haywood's mother Phyllis put up a reward of £100,000 but died without seeing anyone convicted of her son's murder.

Detectives reopened the murder investigation in 2024.

Crimestoppers is offering the reward for information given exclusively to them that leads to a conviction.

A force spokesperson said: "As our investigation continues we are still appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

"No matter how small or insignificant it may seem, your information could be vital."
