A popular bar and music venue has had its licence revoked, after police raised concerns about alleged drug use on the property.

The Twisted Tongue, in Whitehaven, Cumbria, lost its licence following a decision by Cumberland Council's licensing sub-committee on Wednesday.

The bar owners have the right to appeal against the decision to the local magistrates' court within 21 days, and the venue is legally allowed to remain open until the appeal period ends.

Cumbria Police's Insp Michael Hird said he welcomed the council's decision, adding the force takes matters of "public safety, crime and disorder very seriously".

"The vast majority of licensed premises in Whitehaven are operated to a high and safe standard, but let this be a message to those who choose to run their businesses less desirably," he said.

"We will continue to work closely with the licensing authority and partner agencies, taking robust action where necessary to keep our community safe."

The proprietors of The Twisted Tongue have been contacted for comment.
