MP urges people to share views on fireworks

An MP is urging people to take part in a government consultation that could lead to tougher restrictions on fireworks.

The review could lead to the loudest fireworks being limited to organised displays and more pyrotechnic products banned.

Exeter MP Steve Race said Devon residents had reported fireworks causing distress to military veterans, disrupting sleep and affecting pets, young children and people sensitive to sudden noise.

He said: "I know how disruptive unexpected displays can be to people's sleep, particularly parents trying to get young children to bed."

The 12-week consultation comes alongside wider government measures aimed at tackling anti-social behaviour and improving community safety.

Race said anti-social firework use was an issue that constituents had regularly raised, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

"I know how difficult it can be for some neurodiverse people and those living with mental health conditions that are exacerbated by sudden noise," he said.

"I have also heard from pet owners who struggle to manage their animals' stress in the home, or fear for their safety if fireworks are let off when they are outside."

Race said local people have also raised concerns over the amount of debris left behind by fireworks in local parks and play areas.

"Many of us have fond memories of watching spectacular public displays to celebrate events like new year and Diwali," he said.

"I would not want to see the vast majority of people who enjoy fireworks responsibly be punished for the behaviour of a noisy minority.

"Whether it's using quieter fireworks, attending organised displays or sticking to key dates so that people can be prepared, there are a number of voluntary steps we can consider to reduce the impact on our neighbours."

He added there was also a role for the law in cracking down on people who deliberately used the loudest fireworks throughout the year and left behind dangerous debris.

People have until 8 October 2026 to take part in the consultation.
