Motorists faced flash floods in Scarborough on Friday evening, with vehicles stranded and roads closed.

Emergency services attended as several vehicles became stuck in flood water, and North Yorkshire Police warned motorists and pedestrians to avoid the town centre.

Flooded areas included Manor Road, Scalby Road, Valley Road, Valley Bridge, Filey Road, Ramshill Road, and the surrounding streets.

Police said the water receded into the evening, although some roads remained closed, and advised people to avoid the area and follow closure signs.

The Environment Agency has two flood warnings in place for the town at Sandside and Foreshore Road, with coastal roads, footpaths and foreshore areas most affected.

Scarborough resident Boston was travelling home from Manchester Airport after an Ibiza holiday when he became stuck in the floods.

"We were getting picked up by my boyfriend and he was driving us home," the 17-year-old said.

"Suddenly there was hail, thunder and lightning and all of the little town roads were flooded, there's not many roads into the town that are open now.

"No one expected it, the warnings were more for the south and Scotland. Suddenly we've got people in 2ft of water. There were no flood warnings, it came out of nowhere."

The flood warning for the coast is in place until 04:30 BST on Saturday.
