Work on road safety scheme to start in January

Work to improve the safety of a major road in Sheffield is expected to begin in January 2027 after £1.42m of government funding was confirmed.

The money will be used to improve the A625 Ecclesall Road between the A61 and the B6375 near Whirlow, which has been identified as one of 27 urban roads in the UK with high collision rates.

The scheme will include a new 20mph (32km/h) speed limit between Pear Street and Hunters Bar roundabout, while the existing 30mph (48 km/h) limit will be extended to Abbey Lane, councillors have been told.

Average speed cameras and vehicle-activated signs will also be installed, alongside a new pedestrian crossing and an upgraded crossing.

At a meeting this week, members of Sheffield City Council's finance and performance policy committee were told that junctions would be redesigned and central road markings would be added to help separate traffic flows, with detailed design work now completed.

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, councillors were also told the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority had made a conditional offer of £5.5m for safety improvements on the A61 Chesterfield Road.

Plans for that road included changes to bus lane hours, wider entry lanes at Meadowhead roundabout and replacing the subway with a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing,

Further safety measures are planned on Greenhill Main Road and Greenhill Avenue. Bus stops on Scarsdale Road will also be made more accessible, with shelters upgraded.
