A Guernsey-raised filmmaker has criticised the island's lack of government incentives for productions wanting to film on the island.

Writer and director Gene Fallaize plans to shoot forthcoming German occupation drama Under the Watchful Gaze in Guernsey and at Pinewood Studios in the UK.

However, he said filming on the island came at a "considerable financial premium" because rival jurisdictions offer tax incentives and other support that Guernsey does not.

Fallaize is now seeking backing from local businesses and investors, arguing the project could deliver "lasting economic and cultural benefits for Guernsey".

'Guernsey's story'

Fallaize said he was committed to filming on location in Guernsey

"I've always maintained that this is Guernsey's story, and it deserves to be told in Guernsey," he said.

"One of the biggest challenges we've faced is that, from a purely financial perspective, there are much cheaper places to make this film.

"Other territories actively encourage filmmakers with tax incentives and financial support, whereas Guernsey simply doesn't have the same system in place.

He added: "We want audiences to see the actual island, its coastline, its fortifications and the places where this history happened."

Fallaize and lead producer Emily Hasseldine will visit the island on 2 and 3 November to meet prospective investors and discuss potential involvement in the film.

Opportunities could include formal investment participation and executive producer credits.

Hasseldine said the production team hoped to turn local enthusiasm for the project into "meaningful partnerships" with people interested in both Guernsey's heritage and the commercial opportunities associated with a feature film.

The States of Guernsey have been approached for comment.
