Fairy tale-inspired projections at Light Night

Leeds' busiest shopping street is set to be transformed by projections inspired by the "spellbinding world of fairy tales" during Light Night.

The annual event is being held over the half-term holiday for the first time, with illuminations set to be beamed onto buildings and streets across the city centre.

'Far, Far Away', lighting up spaces above Briggate's shopfronts, is partly inspired by the British Library's collection of classic children's stories by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, Leeds City Council said.

The event takes place on Wednesday 28 and Thursday 29 October from 18:00 to 21:00 GMT.

The six-part projection on Briggate is co-produced by Light Night Leeds, the British Library and Hungarian art collective Lightspray Visual.

Light Night 2026 has the theme of 'A City Speaks', exploring the stories, people and places that have shaped Leeds.

A projection on Leeds Civic Hall will see the culmination of a two-year project aimed at "transforming how people feel about maths", organisers said.

Councillor Salma Arif, the council's deputy leader and executive member for economy, said: "Each year, Light Night Leeds brings thousands of people together to view impressive light projections and immersive experiences.

"This year it will be a true celebration of our city and plays a huge role in supporting our local businesses and economy, raising the profile of Leeds as a cultural destination.

"We're thrilled to be working with British Library and City of Maths on these two key projections and can't wait to see them transform our city in October."
