Modular homes for temporary housing nearly complete

A new development to provide temporary accommodation to help families and individuals facing homelessness is nearly complete.

The purpose-built scheme will deliver 38 two-bedroom apartments at a former school site off Billing Brook Road in Northampton.

The plans were signed off earlier this year despite Northampton Academy raising concerns the homes would overlook a playground - creating a safeguarding issue.

Charlie Hastie, deputy leader and cabinet member for housing at West Northamptonshire Council, said: "These new homes will provide modern, energy-efficient accommodation that offers people dignity, stability and security at a difficult time in their lives."

A community hub, children's play area, management office and laundry facilities are also being built on the site.

"As well as improving the quality of temporary accommodation available in West Northamptonshire, this scheme will help reduce our reliance on expensive emergency accommodation, allowing us to make better use of public funds while continuing to support residents facing housing challenges," Hastie added.

In a Freedom of Information request seen by the BBC, West Northamptonshire Council said it had spent nearly £8.5m in 2025/26 on temporary accommodation, an increase from £2.8m in 2021/22.

The development also included solar panels and battery storage to improve energy efficiency.

A second 70-home scheme at Claret Park in Northampton is expected to be completed later this year.
