A 20-year-old man has died in a crash which closed part of the A1(M) in both directions during rush hour.

The major route between junction 62 near Durham and junction 63 near Chester-le-Street was shut overnight, but has since reopened.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second man, also aged 20, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he is in a critical condition. A third man was seriously injured and taken to the same hospital, where he was stable, the force said.

Elsewhere, a crash involving two vehicles closed the same road in both directions at Belford in Northumberland at about 10:00 BST.

In the first crash, Durham Police said a black Mercedes A Class struck the central reservation before coming to rest on its roof.

There were long delays reported on diversion routes around Durham while crash investigators worked at the scene.

The southbound carriageway reopened at about 10:30, and Durham Police said the northbound road had also now reopened.

Road reopened

In Northumberland, Northumbria Police said it was at the scene of the crash on the southbound carriageway on the A1 at Belford at about 10:00.

The road was closed in both directions, with the southbound carriageway being diverted through Seahouses and Bamburgh.

The northbound carriageway was closed between the junctions with the A1068 and the A1167 south of Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Both carriageways reopened around 16:30.
