Mechanic's tips for protecting your car in the heat

The RAC reported a 20% surge in breakdowns during the recent heatwave

The heat has a major impact not only on people - cars also suffer its consequences.

Jess Barker, a mobile mechanic based in Winchester, talks about the importance of checking coolant levels and tyre pressure.

The RAC reported a 20% surge in breakdowns during the recent heatwave and the AA said overheating-related issues had risen by 38%, with older vehicles particularly affected.

These are the steps you can take so you do not end up stuck at the side of a road.

Mobile mechanic Jess Barker said checking the car's coolant levels was "really important"

With temperatures once again set to rise, drivers are being urged to check their vehicles before setting off.

Barker said: "Coolant is like an ice pack for your car and stops it overheating - it's easy to check this at home.

"There's a minimum and maximum level, just refer to your vehicle handbook to make sure you use the correct coolant and always make sure the engine is cool to avoid the risk of serious burns."

She added electric and hybrid vehicles were different and their electrical coolant system was "a separate system and you cannot touch it".

The heat also impacts tyre pressure and can mean a greater risk of a blowout.

"You can do a visual check yourself by feeling around the tyre for lumps or bumps," Barker said.

"You can also easily check your pressure at home - usually an inexpensive device is available readily in most supermarkets or just go to a filling station.

"Make sure you know your vehicle's PSI (pounds per square inch), which is commonly found on your inside door or filler cap."
