North Tyneside Council and Northumbria Police have issued a notice to vacate the site near the Spanish City

A group which set up an unlawful encampment on the seafront of a popular resort have been told to leave the area.

North Tyneside Council and Northumbria Police issued the notice to vacate to people who arrived at The Links in Whitley Bay over the weekend, whose presence also saw a junior park run cancelled.

The council's director of housing Peter Mennell said its teams had been to speak to the occupants of the site alongside the Grade II listed Spanish City.

Whitley Bay Junior Parkrun said it cancelled its regular 2km (1.2 mile) run on Sunday due to the "unexpected vehicles on our start and finish line".

Confirming the cancellation in a post on social media on Saturday, organisers said: "See you all next week (hopefully)."

Mennell said: "Community protection officers, supported by police, are now issuing a legal notice requiring the individuals to vacate the land.

"Officers will keep monitoring the site as part of our ongoing management of the situation."

An encampment was moved on from the same site last July, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
