Gritter lorries have been sent to assist after a road become unsafe to drive on due to an estimated 95-100 drums of oil being fly-tipped on it.

Staff were contacted on Wednesday about the incident on Hollyfast Lane on the outskirts of the city, Coventry City Council said.

"Our crews quickly attended the site and shut it off before anyone could have an accident," the authority said. "Since then, they've been working tirelessly to clean the road."

"I think it's absolutely appalling," said Lisa Boyle, one of the councillors who represents the Bablake ward in the city.

The council said: "We'd like to say thank you to the residents who made us aware of this issue so we could act quickly.

"A road closure remains in place and we ask people to avoid the area if possible."

"It isn't good at all - especially with spillage like that, because that has to be controlled properly," Boyle said.

She said there had been "no end" of fly-tipping in the area and that she felt it needed cracking down on.

"There's been mattresses, asbestos, furniture, couches," Boyle said.

"It needs stronger measures within that area - either CCTV or it being monitored all the time."

Anyone with any information about the incident was urged to contact the authority.
