A man has been seriously injured in a fall from a second-floor window at York Hospital, police have said.

It happened at about 17:35 BST on Saturday and the man received treatment at the hospital following the fall, according to North Yorkshire Police.

A force spokesperson said officers were present at the hospital at the time of the incident and there had been previous police contact with the man.

As a result, a mandatory referral had been made by North Yorkshire Police to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and a full investigation to establish the circumstances prior to the fall was under way, the spokesperson added.

The IOPC confirmed it was assessing the referral to "determine whether an investigation is required".

A spokesperson from York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: "Our thoughts are with the individual and those close to him, and we are supporting colleagues affected by the incident.

"North Yorkshire Police is investigating the circumstances of the incident, and we are supporting them with their inquiries."
