Merseyside pub could be named as 'pub of the year'
CAMRAA much-loved pub is in the running for one of the country's most prestigious pub honours, after reaching the final stage of a national competition.
The Turks Head, in St Helens, is one of just four pubs shortlisted for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) National Pub of the Year award.
The Tudor-style venue, which dates back to the 1870s, has already gone one better than previous years by progressing beyond the regional stage to the final four.
Licensee Clare Harrison, said: "To say we're over the moon is an understatement. We're incredibly proud to have reached the final four pubs, and to be representing St Helens at this level is honestly a dream come true."
'Definitely worth a visit'
She said the achievement belonged not only to the pub, but also to the staff, regulars and wider community who had helped make it a success.
The Turks Head joins the Countryman's Inn in Hunton, North Yorkshire, The Cockpit in Chislehurst, Greater London, and The Tamworth Tap in Tamworth, Staffordshire in the race for the top title.
Located near the town centre, the St Helens pub offers a rotating line-up of 14 handpulls, a selection of real ciders and a large whisky and gin bar.
An extensive range of craft and continental beers can also be found in its upstairs Tower Lounge, which hosts live music and events for local community groups.
"We're proud to be a proper traditional local pub where everyone is welcome - whether you're a lifelong regular or walking through our doors for the very first time," said Harrison.
CAMRA's director for Merseyside and Cheshire, Gill Yates, said the achievement was down to the hard work of the pub's dedicated staff and owners, adding customers knew a warm welcome awaited in a pub that encouraged discussion and relaxation.
CAMRA's Pub of the Year coordinator, Andrea Briers, said all four finalists had thrived despite the current challenges facing pubs and breweries.
"All four are amazing places that are definitely worth a visit, whether you want a top-quality pint, or just a brilliant community-orientated vibe," she said.
