Islanders take on cycling challenge for charity
Graham BeckTwo islanders have taken on the challenge to cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise funds for their favourite charities.
Dr Graham Beck, a medical consultant from Guernsey, has successfully completed one of the UK's most iconic endurance challenges in just 14 days.
As she neared the finish line, fellow islander Ann Bowditch said she has been inspired by the important work animal rescuers do.
She said when her cat Jasper had been a kitten, a large rescue centre had planned to put him to sleep because had suffered from bad conjunctivitis, but the GSPCA had saved him.
GSPCAShe said: "Jasper's story is just one example of animals given a second chance by an amazing rescue.
"I have seven rescue cats and have seen the important work that rescuers do, I have total admiration for their efforts."
Bowditch has dedicated her cycling challenge to raising funds for the GSPCA and Guernsey Lost and Found Pets.
Dr Graham Beck, a consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia, took on the challenge during a period of leave.
The 64-year-old is not a regular cyclist and, rather than taking the traditional 870-mile (1,400 km) direct route, he chose to avoid main roads in favour of quiet lanes.
The consultant said: "A sabbatical is a good chance to spend time away from work to recharge batteries and I'm grateful for the opportunity to take that time.
"While some may have opted for rest and relaxation, I decided to be active and challenge myself to do something totally different."
The firm he works for, the Medical Specialist Group, has pledged to donate to Wheels for You, a charity aimed at making cycling accessible for all.
