A six-year-old boy has died following a van crash, police have said.

Officers were called to reports of an incident involving a white Ford Transit Tipper and a child on Mill Road in Llanfairfechan, Conwy county, after 17:00 BST on Thursday, where the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

North Wales Police said a 39-year-old man had been arrested and later released under investigation, while the boy's family was being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

Flowers and soft toys have been left near the scene, paying tribute to the young boy.

On Thursday evening, a number of roads around Pen-Y-Bryn Road and Bryn Road were closed and people were asked to avoid the area.

Det Insp Tim Evans said: "Our thoughts are with the young boy's family and friends at this extremely difficult time.

"We recognise the profound impact that a tragedy such as this has on a family and the wider community."

An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing and police have asked anyone who witnessed the incident or was in the area around Pen y Bryn Road and Mill Road at the time to get in touch with them.

Evans added: "We're urging anybody who may have private CCTV footage a front door camera or dashcam footage to please get in touch. These may have captured something that you did not think was significant at the time.

"Please do not assume that someone else has come forward – even the smallest piece of information could help our investigation establish what happened."
