A man has been seriously hurt after being struck by a van in a hit-and-run crash.

The pedestrian was hit by a blue Peugeot van on Jennifer Avenue in Everton, Liverpool, at about 18:25 BST on Tuesday, Merseyside Police said.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury, where he remains in a critical condition.

The force said the driver did not stop, with the van later found abandoned on Latimer Street in the nearby Vauxhall area of the city.

Merseyside Police said a 29-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The force said the investigation was ongoing and it appealed for anyone who witnessed the crash or who could have footage of it to contact them "as a matter of urgency".

Det Insp Joe Rea said: "Our investigation into the collision is in the early stages and we are carrying out a number of lines of enquiries."
