A self-storage facility will continue operating near a retail park after a retrospective planning application was.

Pink Self Storage, which houses more than 150 corrugated steel containers near The Galleries Retail Park in Washington, applied to Sunderland City Council to continue operating.

The application sought permission for the change of use of the land which had previously been used as an overspill car park for Durham House, a former Department for Work and Pensions office.

A council report said while there are no staff permanently on site, approval would bring back into use land that had been "vacant for many years with no obvious market interest".
