Cinema marks first anniversary after £2m refit
City of Wolverhampton CouncilA city centre cinema is celebrating its first anniversary this weekend, as more than 70,000 visitors have passed through its doors.
The Lockworks Cinema in Wolverhampton houses four screens inside the Grade II-listed Chubb Building.
The 8,000 sq ft (743 sq m) council-owned space used to have two screens prior to refurbishment, and officially opened on 11 July 2025.
"It is all part of our city centre transformation, creating new destinations, better public spaces and inner-city living opportunities, coupled to a broader entertainment and events programme," said council leader Stephen Simkins.
"The cinema, working alongside popular venues like the art gallery, Grand Theatre and University of Wolverhampton at The Halls, all drive footfall to support local businesses."
He said the cinema, which created 23 jobs, had a "fantastic" first year and became a major attraction.
The authority said it had made a £2m joint investment in the refurbishment and fit-out programme with a commercial operator, which also entered into a 30-year lease.
