Tributes paid to 'one-of-a-kind' man after crash

Tributes have been paid to a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who was hit by a car five days after his 84th birthday.

Pedestrian Charlie Watt was seriously injured in the crash on Cottingham Road, Corby, Northamptonshire at about 16:30 BST on Saturday, 22 August and died in hospital the next day.

In a statement, his family said: "He had a wonderful sense of humour, and many stories to tell. He was a truly special, one-of-a-kind character. If you met Charlie, you definitely wouldn't forget him."

Northamptonshire Police said a 46-year-old man from Corby was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and had been released on bail pending further inquiries.

His relatives added: "There is an enormous emptiness where he should be.

"Charlie had just turned 84 on Monday, 17 August and sadly passed away not long after his birthday on 23 August, which would have been his late wife's birthday.

"Charlie's life was full of love, memories and plenty of laughter, and even at 84 he was still a big kid.

"His stories will be told for generations to come; he was simply magic."

They said they were "thankful for everybody's love and support over this difficult time".

The force appealed for anyone with information or dashcam footage of the incident, which involved a Vauxhall Astra, to get in touch.
