Arena parking restrictions could be extended

Parking restrictions on residential streets near Coventry Building Society Arena could be extended.

At the moment, a permit scheme only allows residents to park there on football match days and whenever there is a concert at the stadium.

But a street just outside the current restrictions zone may be folded into it following a petition from residents of that road.

Coventry City Council's cabinet member for city services has approved the bid, and following a further petition is also considering adding other streets - under a separate zone - that are much further away from the venue. But more steps are required if the proposed measures are to become a reality.

If more roads are added to the existing scheme, those residents and their regular visitors would have to apply for a digital pass giving them permission to park there when Coventry City are playing home games or the stadium hosts concerts.

A total of 112 people have signed a petition asking for the zone to include Cossington Road.

It is a residential street off Lythalls Lane, with the latter already covered by permits.

While the proposal has the relevant cabinet member's backing, the restrictions still have to be advertised for 21 days and if objections are lodged, they have to be considered before the plan is either revised or dropped.

Meanwhile, a separate scheme could be set up to include roads that are half an hour's walk from the arena, including Glentworth Avenue, Malmesbury Road and Charlecote Road.

Council officers said that because these roads were outside the existing parking boundaries, a separate zone would need to be set up, which would need 60% of people living on them to approve the proposal.
