Art charity folds over funding struggles
New Light ArtAn art charity championing Northern talent has announced it is closing due to a lack of funding.
The New Light Art said the decision came after an unsuccessful bid to Arts Council England. The charity had also tried to turn its fortunes around by selling off its collection at an auction in Newcastle earlier this year.
Since it was created in 2010, the charity's work has brought contemporary art exhibitions to venues including The Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle, The Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, Rheged in Penrith and Tullie in Carlisle.
The charity's CEO Rebekah Tadd said the organisation had worked with "wonderful" curators and judges to "shine a light" on artists from the North.
The charity previously said it started having funding issues after its patron of 15 years stepped down in 2025.
Tadd said: "We are sad to announce the closure of New Light, but are extremely proud of what we have achieved since New Light's inception in 2010."
The charity said it was founded at a time when the artworld was "predominantly London-centric".
Tadd said the charity's art prize had seen "emerging Northern artists flourish into household names and established artists sell their work to brand new audiences".
"It has been a huge honour to be a part of our artists' journey," she said.
