Plans have been submitted for the second phase of a major 1,375-home estate.

Vistry Homes has applied for work on land north-east of Bury St Edmunds, off Bury Road, in Great Barton.

The proposal submitted to West Suffolk Council includes 222 homes, with 66 deemed affordable.

There is also set to be a local centre, including a convenience store, nursery and apartments, plus a roundabout and play area.

The bid deals with details around appearance, layout, scale and landscaping.

The nursery is expected to accommodate around 120 children and create jobs for about 30 members of staff.

The homes would range from one to four bedrooms and 76 would be flats.

The plans are now out for consultation, with a decision expected by 5 October.

A statement on behalf of Vistry said the proposal would offer "a development embodying a strong identity and unique sense of place, while simultaneously integrating seamlessly with the existing community".

The applicant aims to start the construction of the homes later this year.

The first phase of the development - including 287 homes - was approved in 2022 by government inspectors.

The latest plans follow the narrow approval of a temporary three-year road to allow construction vehicles on to the site earlier this month to support the scheme's first phase.

Residents had raised concerns about the extra traffic – estimated at 80 HGVs, 40 LGVs and 160 private cars – near an already hazardous junction, but councillors approved it by a single vote.

The overall development will deliver another roundabout onto the A143, public space and a primary school.
