A former Highland League footballer has been jailed for eight years after being found guilty of raping a woman on the Isle of Wight.

Stephen Rennie, of Inverness, was sentenced earlier this month at Portsmouth Crown Court.

The 29-year-old was charged with raping and assaulting a woman in the Newport area in June 2023.

Rennie, who denied the allegations, was found guilty by a jury in December last year.

Detectives at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary investigated the attack.

Rennie played for Inverness Caledonian Thistle in his youth.

He most recently played in the Highland League with Grantown-on-Spey-based Strathspey Thistle.
