More streets could get 20mph speed limits

Residents in towns and villages are being asked for their views on new 20mph speed limits.

Dorset Council has launched the fourth phase of its 20mph programme that will see public consultations held in 17 areas.

The first group to be consulted includes Bridport, Abbotsbury, Leigh, Portesham, Burton Bradstock, Warmwell, Loders, Maiden Newton, Broadmayne and Charminster.

The council has delivered 21 schemes to reduce speeds to 20mph since 2022 following requests from town and parish councils.

Proposals go through a legal process known as a Traffic Regulation Order, which includes a public consultation stage before any changes are made.

The council said all 21 schemes delivered so far had progressed with overall local support, although some proposals had not gone ahead after opposition from residents.

Cllr Jon Andrews, the council's cabinet member for place services, said the schemes were "about helping people feel safer where they live".

"I'd encourage anyone who lives or works in these areas to take part in the consultation so we can hear their views, as well as anyone who travels through them," he said.

A second group of areas - Hinton St Mary, Hilton, Studland, Ashmore, Wool, Colehill and Bryanston - will be consulted this autumn.
