One of Derby's oldest and most well-known streets is set to be lit up permanently by new festoon lighting.

Sadler Gate will be illuminated with the new lights at 21:00 BST on Friday, more than 70 years after the street became home to Derby's first festive lights display.

Love Sadler Gate - a consortium of local businesses - said the lighting stretches the full length of the street and will turn on at dusk each day.

Paul Hurst, chair of Love Sadler Gate, said: "We are absolutely delighted that we will finally be able to get the street lit and create something special."

Hurst said the project had been more than 18 months in the making.

"It's been a huge joint effort between the community and Derby City Council," he added.

"As Derby's original high street, it's incredibly important that we continue to ensure it thrives and remains relevant to people of all ages."
