Peaky Blinders pub The Garrison could be revived

A real-life Birmingham pub that inspired the Garrison pub from the hit television series Peaky Blinders, could reopen, said Birmingham City Council.

The Garrison, a historic pub reportedly visited by the real-life gangsters that inspired the BBC show, closed in 2014.

The building recently reopened as a kitchen and bedroom shop, but the council has said the site could be brought back into use as a pub, as it unveiled its plans for the city's future in its draft Local Plan.

The council said The Garrison is part of a "Peaky Loop" heritage route and any proposals that "harm its potential to be brought back into use will not be supported".

The local authority published its draft Local Plan earlier this month, showing its vision for the city over the next 20 years.

On Digbeth, the council said the area has been transformed into a cultural and creative hub which will benefit from the likes of the BBC's new broadcast centre at the Tea Factory and Digbeth Loc film studios, set up by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

The plan said the film studios have been instrumental in dramatising the city's working-class industrial heritage through the Peaky Blinders production.

It continued: "There is opportunity here to make more of Digbeth's industrial heritage by capitalising on this asset and bring back into use a public house, well sited to serve passing match day custom on the way to the redeveloped Sports Quarter."

The council called The Garrison Pub a "cultural landmark", one that attracts tourism and is "well-placed" to serve a redeveloped Garrison Lane.

The draft Local Plan is set to be discussed by cabinet members on Tuesday.
