A review of the "viability and sustainability" of sidecars taking part in the Isle of Man TT in future is being carried out.

The class was suspended from the 2026 event on safety grounds as a precautionary measure following a crash during qualifying.

Race organisers have now launched a review to examine a "range of sporting, technical and operational factors".

Clerk of the course Gary Thompson said it was "not solely a response to the events of this year" and would look at "participation trends, technical development, incident data and the long-term sustainability" of sidecar racing.

The races are run by Auto Cycle Union Events Ltd on behalf of the island's Department for Enterprise.

People with an interest in the class and the event itself, including competitors, teams, officials, industry representatives, spectators, have been invited to share their views in writing by midnight on 30 June.

A final report on the review is due to be completed by the end of July.

'Continually evolved'

Thompson said sidecars had a "a long and important history" at the TT and the decision to suspend the class from the 2026 event "was not taken lightly".

The review would "examine a wide range of factors" to assess a range of relevant data sets to help ensure that any conclusions and recommendations are informed by both experience and objective evidence.

"We are committed to ensuring that the process is open, balanced and evidence-led," he said.

"The Isle of Man TT has continually evolved throughout its history and it is important that we approach this review in the same spirit."

The club has since confirmed that a classic sidecar race will be held for competitors in the class under the established Pre-TT Classic technical regulations.
