One Last Look

Between Cattedown and the River Plym stands the Prince Rock Primary School. Everybody loved the school; but nobody loved it more than Albert.

He was a teacher who, like many of his age was called to war.

The years passed until 1916. A grenade plunged into the trench where the soldiers were taking cover and Albert was caught in the blast - dust rose around him.

As it settled he found himself standing at the school gates. He was tall but extremely thin and bent as if he was perpetually talking to a young child.

The war had taken its toll. He walked into the playground and looked around. Everything was different, time had passed and yet it felt exactly the same as the day he had left.

He quietly stepped into the building and walked down the corridor pausing to look into each classroom as he passed.

Eventually he came to the canteen and sat down at one of the many tables. He felt that this was an ideal place to settle.

Although he was lonely, he felt content watching the children coming in and out. He would walk around, listening and smiling to himself wishing he could join their conversation

But why was he here?

Days passed and he invisibly helped as best as he could. But Albert was starting to feel restless. He wanted to someone to notice him, even if it was only for a few seconds.

Footsteps made him look up - a boy entered the hall to collect the lunchboxes. A loud gasp and a noisy crash echoed around the room.

The boy stood wide-eyed and trembling , lunchboxes scattered at his feet. His eyes were fixed upon Albert. His face lost its colour and he turned, stumbling out of the hall.

Children's drawing

Albert felt strangely elated - even though he had obviously scared the boy, at least someone had finally seen him. What would happen next?

Albert followed the boy to find out , but was distracted by a colourful display.

He walked towards it and discovered plans to redevelop the school. Albert was as shocked as the day that he had received the letter calling him to war.

As the weeks passed , Albert watched and listened. Everyone seemed happy, even excited about the future. Perhaps he could go now?

Albert had many happy memories of teaching the children at Prince Rock Primary School; memories that had stayed with him during the fighting and memories that had eventually brought him back for one last look.
