Martinez is 100% right. The players haven't been good enough except very few. We need 23 top-class players.

    Alpaslan Amet

It feels shocking to hear Martinez speak so openly. Those are criticisms fans have been chatting about in the pub for years - hearing it from a players mouth is staggering.

  4. 'There won't be any changes now until you get to January'published at 22:55 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Ashley Young
Former Manchester United winger on Amazon Prime

We spoke before the game on how the club needs to invest more, but when they invested in midfield they are not going to be able to go [and buy more]. What does [Martinez] want, a whole new team? They are not going to do that. They need to start in different positions. They could of brought in defence, they could of brought in front but they didn't.

He's just come off the pitch, and emotions are running high. I get and understand that, but we know the recruitment needs to work, it has to be better but it takes time and do it.

The players know that themselves and need to take it among themselves that they are the players in this squad and they are the ones on this pitch and go and produce. There won't be any changes now until you get to January.

Might be the best thing Lisandro has done in a United shirt. But the ownership are still there against the wishes of nearly every United fan, they continue to run the club the way they want (to its detriment), so there’s no need to think Martinez’s words will move them.

  6. 'It's not going to help at all'published at 22:53 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Wayne Rooney
Former England striker on Amazon Prime

That interview is not going to help the situation that the club is in. It's going to bring greater noise, the players are unhappy, they're unsettled and don't trust their own teammates. It's not going to help at all.

  7. 'Everyone has to earn minutes'published at 22:52 BST 13 October

    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Lille

    Arsenal

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta speaking to TNT Sports:

"We had to increase the technical level, teams are really well organised at this level. We gave simple things away - bad touches, mis-timed things, when we sent balls into the box it was into the wrong areas and we get caught. Once we did that better we started to play in the opposition box and with the quality we have they made a difference."

On quality of substitutions: "The ones that started too, we get into some incredible positions. The ones that finished the game were extraordinary - they increased the intensity and quality.

"The minutes are given because they deserve them. Everyone has to earn it because we can see competition and options and that will only ebenfit our performances."

On preparing for the next one: "It's difficult in the Champions League - Lille are a brilliant team. But winning helps - the energy will be good when we start to prepare the Sunday game."

  8. 'We know our quality'published at 22:51 BST 13 October

    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Lille

    Arsenal

Arsenal winger Eberechi Eze speaking to TNT Sports:

"Good performance. We did what we needed to do. Played free and enjoyed it."

On staying patient: "That can happen here. A lot of teams come with energy so first halves can be difficult but we know that we have to grind teams down eventually. It was a good day.

"It's good fun. The type of players we're playing with you're always linking and finding space. It's enjoyable and as long as I'm doing that then I'm happy."

On squad depth: "It is difficult, every player wants to play. The mentality is always to be on the pitch, affect games and earn your place. I'm doing what I can, enjoying what I'm doing.

"Always happy to score, to affect games and be having fun on the pitch and expressing myself."

On half-time team talk: "We knew what we were doing, there were slight details to give us more chances and have more balls inside their box.

"We trust and back ourselves, we know our quality. We play games to win and believe we can and should. It's about the work we've done on the pitch."

On mentality shift from last season: "It's now a different challenge we have. We achieved something amazing last season and we want to build on that. We're coming at it at a slightly different angle but the mentality is still the same - to be ruthless and dominate as much as we can."

  9. 'It's a bit disrespectful to his teammates'published at 22:50 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Wayne Rooney
Former England striker on Amazon Prime

It's a bit disrespectful to his teammates too. He's saying that they are not good enough.

  10. 'I question his timing' but 'everyone can see they didn't recruit well enough'published at 22:49 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

On the comments from Lisandro Martinez:

I question his timing, the noise around Manchester United at the moment, positivity needs to come out of the dressing room.

But on the flip side of that I actually quite like it - a player being honest, every Manchester United fan across the country doesn't need their players coming out saying 'we're doing ok, the squad's strong enough'.

Everyone can see they didn't recruit well enough and they need more players and the squad's not strong enough.

Martinez might be correct about the people at the top not doing enough. But their lack of activity is not causing his poor performances. Solanke didn’t get the better of him on Saturday because of a lack of subs. He needs to give his head a wobble.

  12. 'That strikes me as premeditated'published at 22:45 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Ian Dennis
BBC Radio 5 Live senior football reporter

For Lisandro Martinez to have that clarity of thought, that strikes me as premeditated.

Thinking 'if we lose here tonight that's what I'm going to say' because otherwise you don't dig out the technical director in that circumstance.

Wow, very brave for Martinez for call out the upper management like that. I'm sure it won't go down well within Manchester United but I am also sure fans will be happy that someone in the club is finally saying it in public

    Mark

Martinez is right, refreshing to hear an honest assessment. Rooney and Young being unhappy and 'should be kept in the boardroom' are so wrong, we pay their astronomical wages. We should praise the honesty, as we all know the problems

    Stuart McLean

Martinez saying what most of the fans think. The rot starts at the top, and the squad is not up to the task. Rare honesty from a modern player!

    Ben Dutton

  14. Martinez 'maybe gone a bit too far'published at 22:40 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Wayne Rooney
Former England striker on Amazon Prime

I disagree [with Martinez's comments]. I thought that the performance was okay. I thought it was better, so there were some positive signs.

It's a difficult one because I always used to feel that I was outspoken as a player and you want to have your opinion.

I think he's maybe gone a bit too far, and that should have stayed internal.

The fans want to hear the players speak, they want to hear the players care so you can clearly see that he cares and he wants the club to invest more money in more players, and to do that he's probably one of the players who'll be out the door if I'm being honest.

His performances haven't been good enough, but I think in some ways he's right in terms of the club needing to invest more at the top end of the pitch and the defence, but I think it looks like it was a bit of an agenda and he wanted to say that because it doesn't reflect the performance I thought the performance was better.

  15. VAR 'just keep your nose out'published at 22:36 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

    On Leny Yoro's red card:

VAR stay out of it, just keep your nose out. That's somebody else's opinion. It's not the referee on the field, it's somebody sat watching the television trying to referee the game.

I can completely understand it if the referee has given it on the field because he's one-on-one, there's contact, an arm across the chest.

The referee has seen it, he's on the field, he's ten yards from it. He has chosen not to give it. Don't get involved, keep out of it.

    That is just what's frustrating.

  16. 'I thought it was better tonight'published at 22:33 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Wayne Rooney
Former England striker on Amazon Prime

I thought it was better tonight. Obviously the result is disappointing, but there were positive signs tonight.

I thought Baleba coming in was exellent, and he added that extra enenrgy in the middle. I thought that Santos did well in there too. Overall there were a lot more positives tonight.

The red card, I feel, was very soft, it probably wasn't a red card, and the games done then.

  17. 'Now is the time to be together'published at 22:30 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Bit mixed. It is a tough enough place to come and to get the start we had obviously puts us in a difficult situation but I thought we grew into the game.

"We started having some control in the second half without having real threat. Then there was Bruno's chance and then the red card, which I felt was a poor decision.

"Disappointed really with the chances that we had that we hadn't had more.

"We tried something a little different. Defensively we probably switched the play too much. We feel the game was there for us, is the biggest thing, so we could and should have got more from it.

"We need to find a way for sure. Tonight is a one-off game in judgement, it is the Champions League and a tough place to come.

"We are doing certain things OK."

On Martinez comments: "I haven't seen it. After a game like this you come here to try and get something from the game and you are disappointed and can be emotional. I have not seen it so I don't think it is the right time.

"We all care and show that in different ways but now is the time to be together and work through."

  18. 'When you get these chances you have to take them'published at 22:27 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Ashley Young
Former Manchester United winger on Amazon Prime

The chances that they created today in a stadium like this, with how ferocious it was, those are the positives that they have got to take going into the weekend.

Of course, we said it before the game when you get these chances you have to take them.

  19. 'We did well in spells'published at 22:24 BST 13 October

FT: Atletico Madrid 2-0 Manchester United

    Manchester United

Manchester United's Youri Tielemans, speaking to Amazon Prime: "Tough one. When you concede after a minute it is hard to get into the game straightaway.

"We had more compactness at times, at times we were found out as they had the quality and were going to play through us at times.

"We did well in spells and our character and energy was very good.

"It is very hard to say after a defeat that there is positives. We just have to work hard to keep working and keep trusting in our structure.

"We have to keep working, keep trusting each other and be together on this."

On Martinez's criticism: "I have no comment on that."
