We just might have saved the best for last in the Championship this weekend, as Southampton host bitter rivals Portsmouth in the south coast derby on Sunday.

An always feisty affair is likely to be ratcheted up a couple of notches given it is the Saints' first game since boss Tonda Eckert was given a suspended six-week ban for his role in spygate last season.

We've got plenty of build-up on the game on the two clubs' pages plus a packed preview right here plus a rather challenging quiz, if you are into that sort of thing.

Both games between these sides ended all-square last season. Will someone take the bragging rights this time around?

Millwall spoiled Graham Alexander's return to Preston as manager with a 1-0 win at Deepdale.

The Lions head coach Alex Neil told BBC Radio London:

"The first half was a bit loose from both teams.

"We had our moments but I didn't think we were as clean in getting the ball back as normal or as good as we could be in using the ball in transitions.

"I didn't think Preston caused us any issues at all in the second half and we deserved to win the game over the piece."

  4. We have to improve both sides of the game - Alexanderpublished at 18:28 BST 10 October

Preston boss Graham Alexander lost his first game in charge as they were beaten at home by Millwall.

Alexander has told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"The first half was really positive where we were slightly the better team without taking the lead.

"We have to try to improve on both sides of the game, our defensive structure was really good but there was a slight glitch on the goal which we can fix.

"We've only probably worked on the in-possession stuff for two days because there's a deficiency in our game in defence so we had to try to fix that first and we made great strides along the way."

The problem at Watford isn't just the owners. You have to look at who is hiring and firing the managers. Really need to sack [chairman] Scott Duxbury and bring in someone who will bring in a manager and actually give him time to sort the mess that Watford FC are.

Watford slumped to a 4-0 home defeat by previously winless Burnley.

The Hornets manager Alessio Dionisi speaking to BBC Three Counties Radio:

"I'm very angry. The match was finished after 20 minutes, it is impossible.

"I didn't see the same attitude as against Southampton or West Ham or in training.

"It is impossible to win if the team is not strong. It is difficult to explain. Ten players went to the national team, they did that because at the start the team played well.

"The first problem is atitude and today I didn't see [a good one]."

Burnley thrashed Watford to claim their first win of the season and move off the bottom of the Championship.

Manager Nicky Hayen told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"We delivered a really good performance, particularly in the first 30 minutes.

"We found the right spaces and made good runs. We could have scored more but we didn't make the best decisions.

"Sometimes we were sloppy and gave chances away to the opponent.

"We have to avoid this, but that is one remark, the rest was positives. This group has a lot of quality, we have to perform like this every week and in the new training sessions.

"We had a horrible first window [of games], this is a good start to a new one."

Cardiff failed to back up their win over Charlton last time out as they lost at Blackburn.

The Bluebirds head coach Brian Barry-Murphy has been talking to BBC Radio Wales:

"I'm very disappointed with our performance which wasn't good enough to give ourselves a chance of winning the game.

"We showed signs of what we're capable of in the second half which heightens our disappointment of what we showed in the first half.

"We gave the ball away in really dangerous areas and weren't good enough in possession.

"We lacked aggressiveness, stepped back and that cost us."

Blackburn recorded a second successive home win in the Championship to make it three unbeaten.

They beat Cardiff 2-1 at Ewood Park and head coach Tony Mowbray has spoken to BBC Radio Lancashire:

"We executed what we'd talked about.

"It was a good day for us - they got a goal which was disappointing for us but for the elements after that we showed some grit and determination to stay in front and win a football match.

"We'll put the three points in the bag and move onto the next game."

Wolves dropped to fifth after a 1-0 loss to Middlesbrough.

Wolves boss Cesar Peixoto told BBC Radio WM:

"In the second half, we were better after we conceded the goal. The team reacted; this is team is a big team, a strong team. The guys who come from the bench improve the team.

"In the first half, we have to have more time with the ball like we did in the second half. In the second half, it's ours. We [are] pushing, we press, we go high, we created a lot of chance to cross inside of the box.

"The right result is a draw but congratulations to Middlesbrough.

"Only a strong team react like that. I told the team that if we react like that we are going to win more games than lose for sure."

Middlesbrough sailed into the automatic promotion spots with a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Boro boss Kim Hellberg spoke to BBC Radio Tees:

"I don't think it gets much better than this. A good performance against a good side.

"There was a lot of things that were very good. I think up to the goal, we were absolutely brilliant in terms of the home game, pressing up high. We almost limited them to no chances in the first half.

"After the goal, we showed what we are trying to be - a solid team against a good side because the games will always change when we go ahead.

"I cannot reckon they had any chances to make it 1-1. We defended very good, we defended crosses, we had some transitions where we could have killed the game off but overall I'm very happy."

    On Will Lankshear:

"Will is growing as a player. His technical quality and finishing is on a different level and you can see that with the goal, that header is one of the best I've seen.

"Will wants to improve in everything. At the start it was mainly around the box scoring the goals but now he gives us almost everything."

Imps joint manager Chris Cohen told BBC Radio Lincolnshire:

“I thought for 35 minutes it was the game that we probably wanted. We had a decent chance with Fred [Draper], but weren’t quite able to put it on target.

“And then the timing of the goals today, and the quality of the goals were real sucker punches.

“It ended up being a tough day, although statistically I think it will look really even - it was a tough last half an hour.”

Sheffield United registered their biggest win of the season with a 3-0 home victory over Lincoln.

Blades boss Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield:

“We needed it. We have heard all the noise, so we needed it individually. Players needed to up their game - the coaches, the manager, we all did. And we did.

“This was an awkward game that we had to deal with.

“We don’t like to get bashed up, and I don’t think you would like someone come over the top of you and bash you all the time about your performances.

"We don’t enjoy it and don’t like it, so always the best way to react is by putting in a performance like that.”

Wrexham struck two minutes from the end to snatch a point at Derby.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has told BBC Radio Wales:

"When you concede a great goal, it came from us having a shot on the edge of the box, and he's [Sam Szmodics] smashed in an unbelievable goal.

"We probed and couldn't quite find that moment in the first half and had a few situations, but credit to the lads, they kept going.

"The quality wasn't always where we needed it to be, but I don't think anyone can fault us for keeping chipping away.

"Finally the moment came, a brilliant cross from Danny [Imray], a great header back from Kieffer [Moore], and Ollie [Rathbone] which he's done so many times for us getting important goals."

The Rams are still waiting for their first home league win of the season and head coach John Eustace has told BBC Radio Derby:

'I'm very proud of the effort of the team today.

"The way we went about our business from the first minute was very good - we scored a fantastic goal but just couldn't get the second one in the second half.

"There are lots of positives to take out of the game - Ryan Hedges was excellent at left- back and stepped in really well there.

"We haven't had the starting XI to work with over the past few weeks but everything we did over that period was geared towards the game today - the boys did not deserve to draw today so we have to keep positive and move forward."

Stoke are up to fourth place in the Championship with a 2-1 win at Bolton despite having defender Maksym Talovierov red carded in the first half.

Goalkeeper and captain Viktor Johansson has told BBC Radio Stoke:

"We're a family in there and with the fans as well who helped us massively today.

"Even though we had a man sent-off I thought we played some good stuff.

"This team is special - I can't fault anyone as everyone put in a proper shift today.

"We defended really well, people put their bodies on the line.

"That's the most pleasing win of the year which builds the team spirit and with the fans as well - it's a massive game for the whole club."

Stoke City recovered from having Maksym Talovierov sent off to win 2-1 at Bolton and extend their unbeaten run to six games in the Championship.

The Potters are up to fourth place and boss Mark Robins has been talking to BBC Radio Stoke:

"We started OK when we had the full complement.

"But we then go a man down in ridiculous circumstances - Maxi's been found guilty of being the last man and it was always difficult from that minute and we had to sustain a lot of pressure.

"Apart from the sending off the only blemish is the goal we conceded but I have to say after three weeks to put that sort of shift in is outstanding.

"You have to find a way to win and we did - we dug in and the players didn't do everything right but did a lot right and when they didn't Victor [Johansson, goalkeeper] was there to clean up.

"We've got a team who have dug in and ground out a result and that relationship we saw with the suppoorters at the end is priceless and a joy to see."

Bolton missed the chance to record a third successive Championship win for the first time in 10 years.

They were beaten 2-1 at home by the 10 men of Stoke.

Trotters boss Steven Schumacher has been speaking to BBC Radio Manchester:

"I'm frustrated - it's not good enough from us as we made key errors at really bad times in the game to give them the two goals.

"They showed more experience and quality than we did, and more energy which is the most disappointing thing.

"We knew this was a big oppportunity for us before the game and then they go down to 10 men and we didn't capitalise on that.

"It's never easy breaking down 10 men against good players - they were going to make it hard for us but then when we do create good chances you've got to score."

Blues boss Chris Davies told BBC Radio WM:

"I thought we did well, it was a very good win for us and I liked the way we played the match.

“We made a bright start and showed that intent that we have shown away from home with our set pieces and our power.

“And when the game settled a little bit there was some good football in there, some control, some good moves and I liked the look of us today.

“We fully deserved the win, and it could have been a couple more goals before we actually scored, but we deserved the lead and then from there I like the way we finished the match.”

West Brom fell to a 1-0 home defeat by Birmingham City in one of the day's early games.

Baggies boss James Morrison told BBC Radio WM:

“I’m disappointed with the result, of course. I was really disappointed with the fist-half performance, I didn’t see anywhere near enough aggression.

“And with the timing of the goal, it was important to get to half time and address the defensive structure really because they were playing through us a little bit too much.

“They surprised us really with how they changed their formation, so we had to tweak that. In the second half we were trying, but again I didn’t see the intensity and there were too many performances that weren’t at the level that we expect.

"There were times we would create an opportunity but we didn't back it up and create the pressure that sometimes they did. It's something to look at when I get home and try to fix quickly.

    "It's a frustrating day."
