West Bromwich Albion cruised past League Two side Rotherham in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Championship club had been knocked out in the first round of the competition in each of the past three seasons but never looked like making it four in a row after debutant Jimmy-Jay Morgan flicked in after just eight minutes.

Harry Whitwell made it 2-0 after Ted Cann could only parry a Morgan effort.

West Brom half-time substitute Felix Horn Myhre, on for his debut, bundled in a rebound and Morgan headed home his second from Callum Styles' cross before Fabio Tavares crashed home a late consolation for Alex Bruce's men.

This was a second-tier fixture as recently as April 2024 but two relegations in three seasons for the South Yorkshire side mean there is now a gulf between these two teams which was evident throughout on Saturday.

Bruce, whose father Steve had a brief spell in charge of Albion in 2022, took over at the New York Stadium in the summer for his first job in EFL management and gave debuts to seven of his summer signings from the start.

However, it was a Baggies debutant who made the biggest impact on the match.

Morgan, who has joined from Chelsea for a fee believed to be about £4m after a good season on loan in League One with Peterborough last time out, opened his account with a smart improvised finish after Whitwell scuffed his effort and got his second with a well-taken header.

Rotherham improved after the break but former Wrexham striker Paul Mullin was denied his own debut goal by a smart save from Max O'Leary and moments later Myhre's fortunate goal ended the game as a contest.

West Brom will hope to have a much better season than their 2025-26 campaign where both Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay were sacked before James Morrison eventually steered them to safety.

The ex-Baggies midfielder was given the job on a permanent basis before the end of the campaign and will hope his charges can bring this form into next Saturday's Championship trip to Norwich City.

Rotherham will play their first game in League Two since May 2013 at Cheltenham Town on the same day.
