Barnsley beat Wigan on penalties to progress to the second round of the Carabao Cup after the tie had finished 1-1 in normal time.
Dara Costelloe's first-half goal looked to be enough to send Wigan through until Cameron McGeehan levelled nine minutes from time to force penalties.
The first 10 spot-kicks were scored before Jon Mellish's effort was saved by the knee of Rogan Ravenhill and Josh Earl scored to make it 6-5.
Costelloe came close to giving Wigan an early lead after some fine work by Chris Sze but he was unable to tap in from inside the area.
Fraser Murray then capitalised on a poor back-pass from Earl to race through one-on-one but his effort from inside the box struck the post.
Gary Caldwell's side eventually took a deserved lead in the 40th minute when James Carragher's pass across goal was tapped into an empty net by Costelloe.
The travelling side were made to rue their missed chances when Barnsley captain McGeehan rifled home a Reyes Cleary cross in the 81st minute to level the scores.
K'Marni Miller thought he had won it for Wigan in the third minute of added on time but his goal was ruled out for offside and the hosts went onto score all six of their penalties to progress.
