Matt Lucas and David Walliams Discuss...
Matt.... Of all of the things that you've done in your career, what are you most proud of, and why?
Matt: I think me and Dave did some pretty crazy stuff on stage when we started working together in the mid-90's. Quite anarchic stuff. We were young and fearless. We used to perform at the Edinburgh Festival at midnight and we had all sorts of hecklers but we always took them on.
There’s a sitcom that we piloted a few years called 'Crazy Jonathan's' which didn’t really work but I’m still quite proud of some of the writing we did on that, actually.
I also enjoyed writing original songs in the last 2 series of Shooting Stars and last year I played Leigh Bowery in Boy George's musical Taboo, and I adored doing that. It was so different to anything else I'd done.
Do you get recognised a lot? And what do you REALLY think about your fans?
Matt: People do recognise me but they usually think I am Mark Lamarr. They pass by and shout "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" at me, to which I usually reply "Yeah, never mind 'em, they'll be okay." Sometimes people tell me loudly in public that I was the Tango man too.
David: I don't get recognised much, and am very happy with that. The fans I have met have all been delightful.
What is the funniest or wierdest thing a fan has ever sent you both?
David: Money, keep it coming.
Do you have a favourite type of sausage?
Matt: There's a nice veggie sausage that you can get in Sainsburys - mushroom and tarragon - that I quite like.
Did you prefer working on radio or on TV?
Matt: I look thinner on radio, but it’s nice to take the show on to TV, simply because it means we reach more people. We would happily do more stuff on Radio 4 though.
David: The money is better on TV but you work a lot quicker on radio.
Do you take any costumes home, (at this point I'm thinking about the lady's clothing)?
Matt: Yes, I do have tons of our costumes taking up much needed space in my cupboard! Mainly romper suits and Rock Profile stuff. I finger them lovingly and frequently.
Who do you think makes a better 'lady' - Matt or David Walliams? And do you enjoy wearing drag?
Matt: Dave always says I look more convincing as a lady. He is very conscious of being hirsute (Fact : David Walliams is 68% hair).
David: Matt definitely makes a better woman. I am too big and hairy. I love wearing drag, I am dressed as a lady right now.
