Matt Lucas and David Walliams Discuss...
Who is your favourite character to play and why?
Matt: I like playing Andy because Dave has to push me around all day. I also like doing Bernard Chumley, because that was the first character I ever did. Both characters have very flattering costumes and make-ups too, so I know that when people see me as Andy and Bernard they will write in and offer their bodies.
David: For me Sebastian. It's so much fun working with Tony Head.
David, have you ever had a mad pash for any prime minister?
David: Ooh where to begin? John Major, Margaret Thatcher, Ted Heath. In truth I don't think we would have written the sketch if we didn't think Tony Blair was a bit dishy.
Did you base Emily on anyone in real life?
David: No, but I have seen trannies not far off what she looks like.
The "Yeah but no but" girl, (you know who I mean), can she have a spin off show, please?
Matt: You don't need a spin-off show for Vicky Pollard - just step out of your house - she's everywhere!
The outright favorite character for me, and the "front row gang" at the filming of Little Britain, was the mental patient and pin-head lookalike, "Anne". Where on earth did the inspiration for her character come from? "She" truly is a work of genius, and your performance had us in stitches! "Eh-eh-eh", as Anne would say.
David: Anne came out of improvisations me and Matt did with Steve and Reece from the League Of Gentlemen. Reece christened her. We forgot about her for years. I'm glad you like her. I don't really know where it came from as it was done on the spur of the moment. Next year we will bring out a DVD and the footage of us mucking about with Steve and Reece will be on it.
Matt, is Marjorie just like anyone you know? Have you modelled them on her? Would you like her as your real mother? She would be great!
Matt: I joke to my mum that Marjorie is like her although she isn’t really. My mum is a very nice lady and a lot better spoken than Marj too. But she has entered into that culture of dieting, in that she’s one of those people who goes to Slimming World even though they’re not actually remotely overweight.
Do you see enough scope/longevity within any of your Little Britain characters that would tempt you to make a one-off dedicated 'special'? Could I be so bold as to suggest Andy & Lou?
Matt: The biggest compliment we can get is that people want to see more of what we do. For the time being, I think we should stick to the format we have but perhaps one day it would be nice to develop Lou and Andy, because they are our favourites, and they also seem to be popular with fans of the show. We already have a narrative idea for Lou and Andy which could run across the next series. I could see Marjorie maybe working in a traditional sitcom format, and I think the PM and Sebastian could work in a one-off special too.
