Everton have been quoted a fee of about £40m for Monaco forward Folarin Balogun, although he is expected to be available for significantly less.
The United States international is keen to complete a move before Tuesday's 23:00 BST deadline.
The situation is linked to Beto's exit to Fiorentina and potentially whether the Toffees sign Richarlison from Tottenham, with attacker Iliman Ndiaye going in the other direction.
Balogun did not feature in his side's win over Marseille on Sunday.

Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Iliman Ndiaye from Everton, with Richarlison set to move in the opposite direction.
Although a deal for Ndiaye is largely agreed between the two clubs, it remains unclear whether he will make the switch to north London, with Manchester City among the clubs to have expressed an interest.
Everton are open to selling Ndiaye, 26, after he rejected multiple contract offers and held talks with Saudi club Al-Hilal earlier this summer.
Meanwhile, Everton have agreed terms in principle to re-sign striker Richarlison after he told Spurs head coach Roberto de Zerbi "too many times that he wants to leave".
Everton are growing increasingly confident of completing a loan deal to bring Jack Grealish back from Manchester City, although the precise terms of any agreement remain complicated as the England international enters the final year of his contract at Etihad Stadium.
Grealish has prioritised a return to Everton, where he spent last season on loan, over the option of rejoining his boyhood club Aston Villa, who have also expressed an interest.
Don: It was a match of even chances. Both goalkeepers were outstanding. A very well-worked goal divided the teams right up to the last moment. We need to develop a 'last five' mentality and slow everything down, not charge up the pitch in an uncoordinated way - that cost us this match and will happen again if we don't work out a strategy to close games.
Terry: A key part of Iraola's success last year was making the right substitutions at the right time. On Saturday, we made the wrong substitutions at the wrong time. Scott had a brilliant game and was taken off for an ovation too early. Tavernier had been all over the pitch and given his all, but by the 75th minute his legs were shot and he should have been replaced.
Kirsi: The lack of a second goal cost the Cherries once again as we missed out on our first win of the season. It isn't like we had no opportunities to get a second goal, we've had plenty of opportunities. But we had five shots on target and plenty of other chances, so no excuse in not getting a second goal.
James: Must take their chances. Early days, but nowhere as fluid as last season. We need to sign a good tall defender quickly.

Alex: Not the best performance, but it's a great point away from home. Barry had gilt-edge chances that he squandered in the first half. Despite his four goals already this season, he wastes a lot of chances. Tarkowski took that goal like a 30-goal-a-season striker. He should give Barry some coaching.
Johnny: As usual over past few seasons, we weren't clinical enough, but Everton will always keep going till the death. Building a good young side - O'Brien, Armstrong and Ndiaye cannot be sold.
Tony: I saw them two seasons ago against Bournemouth. They were woeful and Dyche resigned that night. Moyes' Everton are light years ahead of that team - if they had a striker who could finish.
Dusty: We weren't as cohesive as the previous two games. It was a scruffy game but we deserved the draw in the end. Barry could do with some coaching with passing. Mykolenko played great, as did Dewsbury Hall. We just need to be more clinical.

It has been a remarkable 24 hours that has seen Everton supporters unite to keep one of their rising stars.
Harrison Armstrong is seen as a beacon of light in what has been a barren period for the club's academy set up. The 19-year-old scouser is so highly regarded that he has been touted as a future club captain.
The travelling Toffees sang throughout the 90 minutes at Bournemouth, sending a message that they wanted their rising talent to stay. Captain James Tarkowski and David Moyes also made it clear in their post-match interviews they were against any sale.
The fans group The 1878s, who organise pre-match fan and banner displays at Hill Dickinson Stadium, put out a strong statement saying they were ready to step down from their role if Armstrong was sold.
What owners the Friedkin Group have seen is a display of unity they may not have expected.

Everton's decision to reject Nottingham Forest's offer for teenager Harrison Armstrong has headed off the possibility of open revolt against owners The Friedkin Group from a furious fanbase.
The revelation that Everton had received a £40m bid from Forest for the gifted 19-year-old, and it was under consideration, sparked an instant backlash from fans angry at the idea the club's best homegrown product for years could be sold.
Instead, after a day of drama on and off the field, Everton's board - led by chairman and billionaire owner Dan Friedkin - decided to unanimously reject Forest's approach and keep Armstrong.
Everton's fans made their feelings clear during the 1-1 draw at Bournemouth. The reaction was so loud, and toxic, that it is sure to have been heard by Everton's delegation at The Vitality Stadium and relayed back to the hierarchy in the United States.
It is highly unlikely to be coincidence that a deal that looked to be advancing was then stopped in its tracks.
And it will also pacify manager David Moyes, whose mood looked ominous post-match at Bournemouth, as he will now keep a young talent regarded as a key part of the club's future.
Everton's supporters may reluctantly accept that important players could be prised away by Champions League clubs, but the notion of Nottingham Forest being able to do the same added another layer to their fury.
Forest are one of the club's Everton and their fans would hope to surpass, not bolster them by selling one of their crown jewels to them.
For The Friedkin Group, it is a PR catastrophe avoided.

"Bournemouth are quick on the counter and they got up the other end and punished us. In the second half they had a bit more chances than we had. We stuck in the game and thankfully I put the chance away. We'll take it. Set pieces are super important. We want to score goals from them and today it happened."

Everton have avoided defeat in their first away match of a Premier League campaign for the first time since August 2021 (v Leeds United), prior to this afternoon, the Toffees had lost their last four on the road to start a league campaign.
The Tofees managed five shots on target in the first half, their most in the opening half of a Premier League game since managing six against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2025, whilst the Toffees' non-penalty xG of 1.06 was their most in the first half of a league match since September 2025, when they managed 1.17 v Aston Villa.
The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the brightest prospects to emerge from Finch Farm in recent years.
Only days earlier, Moyes had stressed his desire to see more signings at the club before the summer transfer window shuts on 2 September.
It also comes at a time when the club are trying to ward off Manchester City's interest in their attacking talisman Ndiaye and fresh interest in one of their most promising talents will have done little to allay concerns of the supporters.
Both Armstrong and Ndiaye were in the starting line-up at Vitality Stadium but Moyes will know the next few days can define their season.
After finishing a disappointing 13th last time around, the Scot will not only need to decide on the future of the duo before Wednesday but also strengthen in key areas, including a long-awaited addition at right-back.

Bournemouth were resolute against Manchester City last week and they took the lead. The way in which they lost with the two late goals would have felt a real gut-wrencher for them.
Everton are off to a bit of a flyer under David Moyes - beating Crystal Palace and then Preston North End in the Carabao Cup.
It will be interesting to see how Thierno Barry gets on because got a hat-trick against Preston in the Cup in midweek and I thought he was a bit of a nuisance last year to play against. He's still raw but I think he's got something.
I fancy Everton more than Bournemouth but I'm going to go for the draw.

Bournemouth play their first home game under new head coach Marco Rose against an Everton side who defeated Crystal Palace last weekend.

A goal up through Marcus Tavernier with just six minutes of normal time left, the Cherries conceded twice late on to fall to a 2-1 defeat and end their club record run of 18 Premier League matches unbeaten.
As opening home fixtures for Bournemouth's new boss go, facing Everton appears to be a kind one – at least on paper.
The Cherries have won nine Premier League games against the Toffees – their highest number of victories against any opponent.

The south coast side also tend to start well on home territory – they haven't lost their opening fixture at the Vitality Stadium in any of the last eight league campaigns (W4, D4) since a 2-0 loss to Watford nearly a decade ago.
Rose is aiming to become just the second manager to win his first Premier League home game in charge of the Cherries after Scott Parker's 2-0 victory versus Aston Villa in August 2022.
Everton, though, did triumph on their most recent visit to Bournemouth last season, with on-loan winger Jack Grealish settling a tight affair in the 78th minute.
Grealish may yet return to Everton from Manchester City this summer and while manager David Moyes has publicly declared his need for more signings, the Toffees are enjoying a good start to the new campaign.
They followed the home win against Crystal Palace last weekend by beating Preston North End convincingly in the League Cup on Wednesday night.
Moyes made just three changes for the cup fixture and with a tight turnaround and long journey to factor in before Saturday, further rotation may be expected when Everton's team is announced.
Thierno Barry, though, is sure to start after scoring his first hat-trick for the club in the cup fixture at Deepdale.
Barry also scored against Palace last weekend, meaning he is just four goals off his total of eight in all competitions from last season after only two matches.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has matched Barry with nine goals since the start of 2025-26 but perhaps what sets the 27-year-old apart is his ability to convert unlikely chances.

He gave Everton the lead from a tight angle against the Eagles, meaning his nine goals for the Blues have come from an expected goals tally of just 4.3. Only Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo has exceeded his xG total by a higher figure since the start of last season.
Everton will next target beginning their campaign with back-to-back league victories for the first time since 2020-21 under Carlo Ancelotti.

On injuries in the squad, Moyes said he was pleased with James Garner's quick recovery. Hayden Hackney is "touch and go" after rolling his ankle last week, with Christian Noorgard remaining out of the squad.
"No final decision" has been made on Jack Grealish making a permanent move to Everton from Manchester City. He added: "There's no guarantee and to name one person would be wrong. We are in the recruitment business at the moment and looking to see if we can bring some players in if possible."
Moyes is "not in a hurry to sell our best players" after Iliman Ndiaye was linked to a move to Manchester City.
On the performances so far this season, Moyes said: "We've played well in the games and also we've been trying to create more chances - I think that's certainly evident in the games against both Crystal Palace and Preston. That's a positive for us, we took some of the chances the other night [in the League Cup] and we had some bigger ones against Crystal Palace we could have taken."
On players stepping up to play out of position, he said: "When you've got a small squad like we have, we need players who are going to be flexible, play different positions and accept different jobs at different times."
On Merlin Rohl playing out of position, Moyes said: "He's done really well and he's not a player who's questioning being out of position, so we're really happy with him."
On Everton's away support, Moyes said: "It's difficult for supporters so we don't take it for granted. I think our away support over last season was fantastic."

Everton left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko has been speaking to BBC Radio Merseyside about the contract extension he signed in June: "It was an easy decision. We talked to the club maybe a year ago and I said I am happy to stay if they want me. There wasn't a big problem for the club or me - we just signed and I was happy.
"I had two reasons for signing a contract - because my family and I are comfortable here, and the people in the building and the stadium. I am happy to work with them every day."
When asked about his aims for the season: "Hopefully we win more games than last season and we can get to Europe. We have a good group, probably the best in my time at Everton. I'm pretty sure we can do it if we do everything right."
