Magpies boss Matthias Jaissle on Anthony Elanga's absence from the match day squad:

"Probably you know that. Or you can actually assume [injury]. Other than that there would have been no reason. So we hope that when the further investigations, with pictures, with the MRI, that it's getting more clearer, but for now it doesn't look that good."

Leeds United climbed to third in the Premier League with a superb Elland Road performance as they inflicted a heavy 4-1 defeat on a helpless Newcastle United.

A 14-minute burst in the first half proved too much for the Magpies, with an own goal from Lewis Miley following strikes by Jayden Bogle and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, before Noah Okafor netted in the second period.

Leeds now sit third on eight points - just four adrift of champions and leaders Arsenal.

Daniel Farke's side needed a slice of luck to take the lead when Ao Tanaka's 32nd-minute strike took a wicked double deflection off Sean Steur and Miley before looping into the bottom corner.

But just two minutes and 42 seconds later, Calvert-Lewin thought he had headed in Leeds' second but the final touch came off the top of team-mate Bogle's head for 2-0.

But, a minute into stoppage time, Calvert-Lewin claimed his goal with a composed finish across Lukas Hornicek - taking his career tally against Newcastle to eight.

It went from bad to worse for Newcastle in the second half when substitute Okafor slotted home Leeds' fourth of the night.

Substitute Bazoumana Toure managed to find a consolation goal for the visitors in the 90th minute, but it was too little too late.

Leeds United

Leeds boss Daniel Farke on the game: "For each manager, it's a nightmare to concede so late after a performance like that. We allowed them to score, doesn't take anything away from us. My boys were brilliant, perfect start. Even in a perfect performance there's always something to moan about, this was definitely one of the rare points I have to criticise.

"Energy, quality, we knew we needed to find a good balance but we were aware of their [Newcastle's] pace and their counter attack. We found the balance today, we were the dominant side.

"We have good fitness levels, you always need to find the right triggers. When you press, everyone has to be on the same page. It's a lot of work at the training ground to be that intense. It's not easy otherwise all the other opponents would do it. Such hard work, we had more chances to score tonight, overall happy with the performance."

On the first goal being lucky: "Wouldn't say lucky. We brought ourself into a good shooting position, there was quality of the strike for my players. Sometimes there's deflections but it was an important combination of us in that area."

On Dominic Calvert-Lewin: "He plays with confidence, his fitness is up. I expect him to lead the group. He's taken responsibility, never in doubt that he scores goals. It's not just the goals though, the way he plays is outstanding. He's one of the standout strikers in this league."

"Tonight, we'll enjoy the win. Tomorrow, we prepare for our next game on Sunday."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, speaking to BBC Sport, said: "That was a tough match, a tough evening. We said beforehand this season would be with many challenges and tonight we faced a big challenge. A tough night, we didn't wish to have that but we need to learn straight away and the good part is we play at home on Saturday and we need to show the right reaction straight away.

"We are all in the same boat, I don't want to blame anyone. In the Premier League you need to bring the fundamentals on to the pitch, the physicality. If the opponent is showing that and if you can't match this physicality then it's going to be difficult and that's something we learned today.

"I don't want to search for excuses. We know with a young squad if something goes wrong you need to find the right reaction on the pitch and we were not able to do that."

Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle on using 18-year-old Sean Steur rather than more experienced midfielders when Nico Gonzalez came off:

"Unfortunately JJ [Jacob Ramsey] was unable to play today, he felt his thigh in the warm-up so that was also a reason why there was not too many alternatives actually for that position then so in general we trust our young lads but today we also saw that the lads need time."

Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "That's football, that's the Premier League. It was clear from the start and I said many times we would have ups and downs and challenges along the way. Tonight we faced a challenge.

"It's tough, really tough, difficult to digest. This is a chance to learn straight out of it and there's not much time to the next match, which is good.

"With our young squad there will be ups and downs. Leeds are so intense, especially at home and we could not match that physicality in the first half. I don't want to have excuses, we need to learn and be better. We missed the fundamentals."

Only Arsenal (52), Manchester City (50), Manchester United (45) and Bournemouth (37) have won more Premier League points in 2026 than Leeds United (35), with the Whites suffering just a single defeat across their last 13 league games (won six, drawn six).

Player of the match, Leeds' Jayden Bogle: "It's about working and having an understanding of the players and playing with them. Dom [Calvert-Lewin] is in the middle competing for everything, getting players next to and under him is massive for us. It paid off well tonight.

"We worked on rotation, JJ [James Justin] was going a bit higher and wider sometimes which leaves the pocket open for me to get into. Dom [Calvert-Lewin] occupies two centre-backs. It's about getting into an area where the ball might go. We tried some different patterns and movements we've worked on in training to make space."

"We wanted to start well today, get the fans on board and get them going. We did that to start with, it was about maintaining that and keeping the energy high. It was a tough game, a lot of running, it was tough physically. They [Newcastle] are a top side, they can hurt you at any point."

On Leeds' ambitions: "At the moment, we're taking it game by game, we're not to get to carried away. Everyone is ambitious in their own ways but as a group, we'll stay focused and focus on the next game."

It will be a tough time for Newcastle this season. New coaches, young players. But, they just got beaten up out there today.

It feels like the physicality across the league has jumped again. The power, the pace and physicality is going up every year.

"You have to say the best side won. In that first half they just totally dominated. They won every second ball. They were better in every aspect to the game. The third game really killed it off."

I love the way Leeds start their games, the intensity is there. There's more there to them than fast attack. There's lots of rotations, very well organised and coached. They've got so many strings to their bow.
