This is the first ever English top-flight season to see three teams fail to score in their opening three matches - Aston Villa, Coventry and Spurs.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery, speaking to BBC's Match of the Day: "We planned this match the way we played. We were trying to dominate the match with our positioning, keeping possession of the ball as much as possible, and not conceding transitions, free-kicks or corners was our objective throughout the match. During the game, we tried to feel comfortable, create some good individual actions and be clinical. We created around five good chances to score. The next step for us is to continue building the team and try to correct a few things offensively. We are improving, but not enough. Overall, I can tell the fans and the players that I understand this is the way. In the last four years, with the success and performances we have had, we have had some days like today."
On new players taking time to gel: "The players who joined us need some adaption. Some our adapting quicker than others. In everything we are building, we must try and add the players who joined us in the direction we want."

Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: "Good evening. Positive. The result is not enough, but how we planned and how we played and how we created, dominating some chances to score - I think we deserved more. We avoided some mistakes we made before, we avoided the transitions. We avoided to have corners or free-kicks where they can feel strong. Through our positioning, keeping the ball and possession, we tried to dominate. Through it, we had more chances at the end to win. They are very motivated, excited to be here at home, the supporters and they had some options. But overall, in 90 minutes I can feel comfortable we are progressing. It's hard, but we have to accept how we are. Again, building the team."
On missing chances: "Yes, we weren't clinical. We had four very good chances to score and of course, if we're scoring the match can change. And when you are not scoring, you must always be careful about the transition and long ball situations and corners defensively. But overall, understanding how we started the season, adding players to get our structure stronger is one step forward more that we did today. Not completely happy, but I think and I told the players this is how we did before our way here. With the players we had, the players we had, the new players, we try to give this injection."
On whether they need patience from fans: "We worked four years in the same structure and we were always feeling comfortable. The supporters were more or less happy with how we did it. Now, we need time and in some ways it may not be passion but we have passion. Of course to win matches, you need goals. But, we created chances today to score and we must improve. Being clinical in the actions we created. Then, we need to exploit better and better set-pieces. "
On whether it would have been unfair if Hull scored a late winner: "Justice or not, you must be clinical when you get chances and you must defend. Today, a clean sheet is very, very important. Last week against Arsenal, we wanted to feel our confidence, our build of the team. Our players more or less feeling better. Today, we did another step forward. Clean sheet, we had chances, we didn't score. Move on and work hard to try and correct, to be in all of the tactical situations and in difficulty, feeling better and how we can improve it."

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic, speaking to Sky Sports: "We could have won, but they also had a few chances in the second half. We won't be ungrateful for seven points after three games and another clean sheet. It's a great result for us."
On his team's formation and shape: "We can improve some things because even Aston Villa found some space, but this is also about quality. I think we have stability and can defend the box better."
On his Hull's start to the new season: "Amazing! If someone offered me seven points before the start of the season, I would sign immediately! Especially against who we have played. It is a great example for us and we have to continue like this because we have shown that we can compete at this level."

What Hull are doing is playing like a team who are trying to earn every inch of their place in this league. We’ve seen teams like Brentford and Bournemouth really cement their place. Hull are doing everything right! Still a long way to go but really excellent work!

On balancing his new signings into the team: "I know the core of my team, this is the Championship players. Of course, we brought the players in to put some quality there. We have. The big problem for me is who didn't have a pre-season. This is a very big problem. But we will try. For example on Tuesday, we will use that to give minutes and at the end, they will get a new chance."
On Oli McBurnie's late chance: "Maybe fatigue, because it's a great effort from Oli. It is very demanding because we were out of possession which is very normal. Aston Villa is a good time, they need more time with their new players. Same with Ali-Cho. I don't know how many meters, if he shoots one metre around the goalkeeper. He has a chance. But we will not be ungrateful, we will be looking forward."
On recent form: "Maybe expect to fight for a Champions League place? No, of course it is early. Our goal is to as soon as possible, collect the points. I think around 38/40 points, so as soon as possible to get these points."

Only three players have attempted more crosses in the Premier League this season than Hull City’s Ryan Giles (21), while he’s only bettered his eight against Aston Villa in a top-flight match in August 2023 against Brighton and Hove Albion (14) and Chelsea (10).

It sounds so cliche, but every game away from home is so difficult. These guys have had a good start, so we expected a tough game. We expected that we were going to have fight and win duels, win second balls, and be patient. We had some good chances. They were always going to cause us a threat as well because they are a good team. Overall, in the context of our season, some people might say it is a bad point and we should be coming here to win, but I always value any away point, especially with a clean sheet.
"Not to say that the changes we have had this season are the reason, but it takes time for a new team to gel. We have signed some fantastic players. Overall, as a centre-back, I am happy with an away clean sheet."
Is patience the key for Aston Villa this season? "We don't sit here and say we are not trying to win games. We have to take the responsibility as players who have been here for a long time and help the new signings gel and settle in, and get used to the manager's ideas and how we play as quickly as possible. Of course, patience is key, and it reminds me of the start we made last season. We have a fantastic group and I am really excited for what we can achieve this season."

Hull City defenders John Egan and Ryan Giles have been speaking to Sky Sports.
Egan on the result: "Really happy with a point. It's a good clean sheet, first and foremost. I think both teams had chances. They are a really good team and we had chances too. I think we probably finished the stronger of the two teams, but overall, it's a really good point for us."
On three clean sheets in a row: "The work goes into it on the training pitch. It probably started in the play-offs when we moved to that shape and we have a lot of experience who have played a lot of games and it all helps. We've got a lot of lads who want to work together, defend for each other and so far, so good. We just have to keep improving."
On the start to the season: "It's huge for our confidence coming up into the Premier League. The start is important. We got the win the first day and I think that gave everyone confidence. I think going forward, Giles has got one of the best deliveries in the league. Playing to our strengths. We've got good players on the counter attack. We've got good players at defending the block, it's about improving now. Taking confidence from every result and on to the next one."
Giles on their success in their 5-4-1 formation: "I think so. I think it gives us a good foundation with the big man in the middle. We've got good experience in the group, we're a tight-knit group and it worked well together and I think it is showing."
On his role: "Ultimately, that's what I'm in to do. Get up and down. My work-rate for the team is what I try and thrive off and keep delivering hopefully the balls I can put into the box and hopefully, one of them will come off."
On his late cross for striker Oli McBurnie: "I would've put my house on the big man to put that away, but we'll let him off just this once. It was a great performance from the boys and if we can keep off these foundations, we'll be alright."

Villa had a poor start last season as well so I wouldn't panic too much. Hull look bar far the best equipped of the three promoted teams to stay up.

I think a lot of Villa fans would agree with Tom from Cannock, we have faith in Emery and that we will be a good team this season - especially once we see Manzambi, Madjo & Mbaye get on the pitch.

Le Fee penalty saves point for Sunderland at Brentford
Enzo le Fee scored a late penalty to rescue a point for Sunderland in a hard-fought draw with Brentford.
The French midfielder sent keeper Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way from the spot after defender Keane Lewis-Potter was punished for holding substitute Wilson Isidor in the area with eight minutes to go.
Vitaly Janelt had scored a fine goal early in the second half for Brentford after they recovered from an opening period in which Sunderland completely dominated.
Brentford remain unbeaten this season but Lewis-Potter's over-eagerness to hold Isidor ensured Sunderland avoided a second defeat of the season
The first half was goalless but there was some early drama when Dan Ballard thought he had put Sunderland in front with a fine finish.
However, new signing Kevin Danso was adjudged to be in an offside position and blocking Brentford goalkeeper Kelleher's view after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) review.
Le Fee rattled the post soon after with a fizzed strike as Sunderland looked the most likely to score in the opening 45 minutes.
Brentford boss Keith Andrews was clearly not happy at the break and he made a triple substitution with Jaidon Anthony, Yehor Yarmolyuk and Aaron Hickey on for Dango Ouattara, Mamadou Sangare and Michael Kayode.
Then they took the lead in the 57th minute minute when Sunderland's Nordi Mukiele got his head to a cross from Mikkel Damsgaard but Janelt cut across the ball brilliantly to send a shot spinning into the top corner.
Anthony thought he had a second for Brentford but referee Thomas Bramall ruled the Bees forward had kicked the ball out of a hesitant Roefs' hands and the VAR agreed after a short check.
Le Fee had missed a penalty in this fixture last season - which Brentford won 3-0 - when he tried a 'Panenka' but he kept it straight forward this time to earn his side a deserved point.

Andrews was not shy in making changes at the break and it almost secured Brentford three points.
Record signing Sangare has had rave reviews for his performances in their first two Premier League games of the season since joining from Lens but he picked up a booking in the first half and was not at his best.
Anthony was one of those half-time substitutes and the former Burnley winger wasted an early chance but showed more attacking threat.
Then Yarmolyuk played a role in the build-up to the opener before Damsgaard put in the ball which eventually led to Janelt's great finish.
Brentford remain unbeaten and if Andrews continues to show bold management then the Bees could be well placed to push on from their ninth-placed finish last season.
If they can maintain their strong record at home it will help, too. They have not lost a game on their own patch since February.
The concern for Andrews is that they have now surrendered four points from winning positions in their three games, having also conceded late in a draw away at Leeds last weekend after an opening game victory over Tottenham.
'One of our best first halves' - Le Bris pleased despite Brentford draw
Sunderland looked like they would rue failing to take advantage of their first-half dominance.
They have recovered from an opening-weekend defeat by Ipswich to beat Fulham and now pick up this draw.
Sunderland had so much of the ball in and around Brentford's area in the opening 45 minutes with 25 touches inside the box.
Yet they failed to create many clear-cut chances apart from when Le Fee rattled the post.
They may argue Ballard's goal should have stood - and what a finish it was from the defender - but Danso was clearly blocking Kelleher.
Regis le Bris' side seemed stunned by Brentford's changes at the break and it took them a while to really get to grips with the game again in the second half.
Isidor's introduction in the 64th minute brought more of a threat while deadline day signing Malik Fofana may bring more creativity in the coming weeks after the former Lyon winger made his debut here as a second-half substitute.
Le Fee could have crumbled under the pressure after his mistake last season but he kept his cool with a fine spot-kick and a point was deserved for the visitors.
The Sunderland attacking midfielder now has 12 goal involvements in the league since the start of last season with six goals and six assists, more than any other Black Cats player.

Brentford are unbeaten in four home games against Sunderland in all competitions (W2 D2) since losing 1-0 in August 1987 in a third tier meeting.
Sunderland suffered a 3-0 defeat in their most recent Premier League game against Brentford in January – the Black Cats have never lost consecutive league meetings with the Bees.
Sunderland have won just eight points in their last 16 away Premier League matches in London (W2 D2 L12), losing their last three and conceding three goals in every defeat (0-3 vs Brentford, 1-3 vs West Ham, 0-3 vs Arsenal).
Brentford have kept five clean sheets in their 11 Premier League home games in 2026, including in three of the last four. It’s as many shutouts as they kept at the Gtech Community Stadium in both 2025 (2) and 2024 (3) combined.

Sunderland accumulated an xG of 2.02 in their 1-0 win over Fulham on MD2 – across the last two Premier League seasons, only in their victory over Newcastle in March this year (2.36) have they had a higher xG total.
Habib Diarra has two assists in his last four Premier League appearances for Sunderland, both as a substitute for goals scored by Wilson Isidor. In their Premier League history, only Emanuele Giaccherini (3) has more assists as a sub.
Only Diego Gómez (8) has had more shots without scoring in the Premier League so far this season than Brentford’s Igor Thiago (7). The Brazilian had the best conversion rate of any player to have 25+ shots in the competition last term (26.2%).
Since their return to the Premier League last season, Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor has scored more goals as a substitute than any other player in the competition (5), with his winner against Fulham last week coming from the bench.
